Celebrating Community Art
Houston BCycle is proud to contribute to Houston’s rich history of community-based art by transforming our bike-sharing stations as functional art. We are committed to using Houston-based artists with community input on design.
Navigation Esplanade
“Whimsy Station 2” by Shelbi Nicole
Whether there’s a mercado, a Friday night street party or just a weekday lunch, there’s always a party vibe going on at Navigation Esplanade. Shelbi Nicole carries out that vibe on the BCycle station, which is right in the heart of the action. Huge thanks to Wells Fargo USA, East End Houston Cultural District and East End Improvement Corporation for their support, both financially and as community champions.
Main & Dallas
“Whimsy Station” by Shelbi Nicole
Shelbi’s signature whimsical style is so representative of the joy and freedom riding a bike means for many people. Art draws you in, which is exactly what Shelbi’s design does. When you drive by GreenStreet, you’ll be intrigued by the beautiful colors on the BCycle station. But on a bike, you can get caught up in the cute swirls, polka dots and flowers of the design. The world seems brighter on a bike. Thanks to GreenStreet and Midway for revitalizing this BCycle station with an incredible infusion of vibrant street art.
Harrisburg & Sampson
“Sprinkles” by Alex Arzu
It was serendipitous that Alex Arzu’s design was chosen for this East End Art Station since he is an East-Ender himself. His design, “Sprinkles” was created with spray paint and works in harmony with the New Hope Housing building where the station is based. The Sprinkles Art Station is yet another bright spot along the Harrisburg rail corridor which features tons of murals and the Harrisburg Art Museum and Graffiti Building. Many thanks go to New Hope Housing for funding both this station and the Art Station project.
Midtown Art Stations
“Midtown Swirl” by Kate Vance
“The Harlequin Station” by Magdalena Esparza
Two local artists have brought Houston BCycle stations to life, with gorgeous custom designs to celebrate the vibrant colors and feel of Midtown. Designs by Magdalena Esparza and Kate Vance were chosen from 28 submissions among Houston’s art community. Houston BCycle is honored to add to the public art space, thanks to funding from the Midtown Management District. If you haven’t already, check out the stations at LaBranch & Alabama and Brazos & McGowen to see their fantastic artistic upgrades.
